Hesara Jayasinghe: The Rising Star of Sri Lankan Shot Put
The Sri Lankan junior athletics scene has a new name etched in its record books. Hesara Jayasinghe made headlines at the Asian Junior Championship selection trials in Diyagama, where he established a new junior national record in the Shot Put with a mark of 16.92m.
Behind this athletic milestone is a story of academic dedication and a journey through two prominent schools.
Academic and Personal Background
Hesara began his educational journey at Anuradhapura Central College. Recognizing his potential in both academics and sports, he later moved to St. Joseph Vaz College in Wennappuwa.
His home town is Punewa in Medawachchiya.
Currently, Hesara is a dedicated student in the Biology stream for his Advanced Level examinations. His motivation for excelling in the classroom is deeply personal; he aims to use his education to provide a better future and alleviate the financial hardships faced by his family.
Support System and Training
Transitioning to a new school and competing at a high level requires a strong support network. At St. Joseph Vaz College, the Old Boys’ Association has taken an active role in Hesara’s development, providing the necessary care and resources to help him balance his rigorous studies with his athletic commitments.
On the field, Hesara trains under the guidance of his current coach, UPD Perera. Their partnership has already yielded significant results, as seen in the recent trials where Hesara surpassed the previous record of 16.69m, which had been held by Jayavi Ranhinda Alwis since 2024.
Looking Ahead
While his record-breaking throw of 16.92m was a major achievement, it fell short of the 18.00m qualifying standard required for the Asian Junior Championships. However, for a student-athlete managing the demands of the Biology stream while competing at the national level, the future remains incredibly bright.

හෙසාර දැනට උසස් පෙළ ජීව විද්යා (Biology) අංශයෙන් අධ්යාපනය හදාරන ශිෂ්යයෙකි. ඔහු අධ්යාපනයට මෙතරම් වෙහෙසෙන්නේ තම පවුල මුහුණ දෙන ආර්ථික දුෂ්කරතාවලින් ඔවුන් මුදාගෙන සුවපහසු අනාගතයක් උදාකර දීමේ උදාර අරමුණ ඇතිවය.
