Rumesh Tharanga Wins Rome Diamond League with Record-Breaking 92.62m Throw
Sri Lankan javelin sensation Rumesh Tharanga delivered a historic performance at the Rome Diamond League, stunning the athletics world with a colossal throw of 92.62m. The effort not only secured his maiden Diamond League victory but also set a new national record, a meet record, and sealed the world lead once again.
Just days after making his Diamond League debut in Rabat, where he finished second, Tharanga soared past the 90m mark for the first time in Rome , achieving the milestone on his second attempt. That throw sealed his place in history, making him the 8th best javelin thrower of all time.
Remarkably, Tharanga now owns the first, second, third, and fifth best throws of 2026, cementing his status as the man to beat in javelin this season.
Rising Star from Kalutara
At just 23 years old, Tharanga’s journey from a schoolboy cricketer in Kalutara to global athletics stardom has been extraordinary. Initially a fast bowler clocking 134 km/h, he switched to throwing events under the guidance of his father, a former discus and shot-put athlete. By 2017, he had embraced the javelin, setting the stage for his meteoric rise.
His early career included a 6th-place finish at the Asian Junior Championships in 2021 and a 7th-place finish at the World Junior Championships in 2022. After limited opportunities, he broke through with an 85.45m throw at the Asian Throwing Championships in South Korea, narrowly missing Olympic qualification.
Fast forward to 2026, and Tharanga trained under Tony Prasanna is no longer an underdog. His 7th-place finish at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, ahead of Olympic champions Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem, confirmed his credentials as a rising force.
Looking Ahead
Following his triumph in Rome, Tharanga is set to continue on the Diamond League circuit, with appearances in Ostrava and Doha later this month. His ambitions extend to the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and the Asian Games in Japan.
With his sights firmly set on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Rumesh Tharanga’s record-breaking throw in Rome marks not just a personal milestone, but a defining moment in Sri Lankan sporting history.
