In a historic moment for Sri Lankan athletics, 18-year-old Takshima Nuhansa Kodithuwakku has become the youngest athlete from Sri Lanka to win a medal in an individual event at the South Asian Athletics Championships 2025, securing silver in the Women’s 800m finals. This phenomenal achievement marks a new chapter in the nation’s sporting history and highlights the emergence of a rising star from the Southern Province.
A student of Matara Central College and coached by Amila Hapugala, Nuhansa hails from the village of Komangoda in Thihagoda, Matara. Her father, a farmer, along with her mother and brother, have been pillars of support throughout her journey.

Nuhansa’s athletic career began in 2017 with the Under-12 4x50m relay. She quickly rose through the ranks, winning gold in the 400m at the John Tarbet Junior Athletics Championships in 2019.
