Hansana Continues Father’s Legacy
Former national record holder Sanjaya Jayasinghe was a household name in Sri Lanka’s triple jump arena for nearly two decades, with multiple accolades to his name. Now, his son Hansana Jayasinghe is continuing that legacy, setting a new meet record at the Sir John Tarbat Senior Athletics Championship held at Diyagama .
Competing for St. Benedict’s College, Kotahena, Hansana leaped 15.41m in the Under-18 boys’ triple jump, surpassing the previous record of 15.07m. With Sanjaya’s national mark of 16.39m still standing, Hansana’s performance suggests it may not remain untouched for long.
The day also saw fireworks in the 200m finals, with four records shattered. Among the standouts was Kalhara Indupa of Ananda Sasthralaya, Kotte, who clocked 21.30 seconds in the Under-20 boys’ 200m — a new meet record. Indupa recently starred in Sri Lanka’s tour to India, anchoring the 400m relay to gold.
In the girls’ Under-18 200m, Dhananjana Fernando of Lyceum International School, Wattala impressed with a record-breaking 24.40 seconds. Meanwhile, hurdler Ayomal Akalanka from Ambagamuwa CC dazzled once again, clocking 50.51 seconds in the Under-20 400m hurdles — nearly two seconds faster than the previous record of 52.14.
A total of 13 new meet records were set over the two days of competition.
