Yupun Abeykoon’s Remarkable Comeback after the injury

Sri Lankan sprinter Yupun Abeykoon has made a stunning return to the track with a breathtaking performance in Italy, clocking an impressive 15.19 seconds in the 150m event. This marks a significant comeback for Abeykoon, who faced a challenging year due to an injury that sidelined him from competition, causing him to miss pivotal events such as the Asian Championships and the Asian Games.

Despite the setback, Abeykoon has not lost sight of his goals. Holding the Asian record for the 150m with a time of 15.16 seconds, he narrowly missed breaking his own record by a mere 0.03 seconds. His determination remains unwavering as he sets his sights on the ultimate prize: competing at the highest level in his favored 100m event to secure a spot in the Paris Olympics and to dream of reaching the Olympic finals.

Reflecting on his journey, Abeykoon shared, “I have a few things to finish from last year.” The previous season was cut short when he strained his hamstring during the opener, an injury that not only affected his career but also had repercussions for Sri Lanka’s medal hopes in the Asian Athletics Championships in Thailand and the Asian Games in China.

Abeykoon’s resilience is not new to those who have followed his career. In 2022, he clinched a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games and continues to hold the Sri Lankan record for the 100m with a remarkable time of 9.96 seconds. As he gears up for the upcoming competitions, the athletic community eagerly anticipates what this season will hold for the determined sprinter.
