India’s Annu Rani created history on Tuesday by competing in the javelin throw women’s final at the IAAF World Championships 2019 where she finished in 8th place out of 12 in Doha. Annu had made a good start and was fifth after her first throw of 59.25m but then started to drop down the order with throws of 61.12m, 60.20m, 60.40m, 58.49m and 57.93m.

Kelsey-Lee Barber of Australia bagged the gold medal with her final attempt of 66.56m. China’s Shiying Liu and Huihui Lyu took home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Even though Annu failed to win a medal for India, she did manage to impress with her performances right till the very end of her campaign at the Khalifa Stadium. She was vying to become only India’s second athlete to win a medal at the World Championships after Anju Bobby George, who had bagged the bronze in 2003 in women’s long jump.

Annu had finished third in Group A and qualified for the finals as the fifth-best performer of the qualification round. She achieved her personal best with a throw of 62.43m, breaking her own national record in the process. Annu, who is the first Indian to reach the finals of the women’s javelin throw in the World Championships, opened with a 57.05m before coming up with her career-best throw in the second round. She had a 60.50m in her third and final throw.

After set back in 2017 Asian Championship in-front of home crowd , Annu Rani returned to form during the Asian Championship earlier this year , also held in Khalifa stadium Doha with performance of 60.22m performance .

earlier in the day ,  Avinash Sable shattered his own national record and qualified for the final of men’s 3000m Steeplechase final race.Avinash clocked 8:25.23s to finish 7th in first round heat number 3 and 20th overall out of 44 athletes who completed the race. But he was involved in two incidents during the race that blocked his path and thereby slowing him down for no fault of his.

The Athletics Federation of India later filed an appeal, saying that Sable was blocked twice during the race, and he got a favourable decision. IAAF confirmed Avinash’s qualification for the final by including him among the finalists in the official results. Earlier this year, Avinash had set the national record at Indian Grand Prix in Patiala with a timing of 8:28.94s before bettering it by more than 3 seconds here at the Doha Championships.
