Another Record-breaking run from Hiruni in Utah

Marathoner Hiruni Wijayaratne clocked 33 minutes 31.6 seconds setting a new Sri Lanka women’s 10km best as she finished second in the 10km run of the Deseret News Marathon held at Salk Lake City, Utah USA.

Running on 1500m altitude Hiruni finished 14th overall and 2nd among women where she lowered her previous 10Km best of 35.09m clocked during Phoenix-Mesa Half Marathon last year.

During the course, her 5km split of 16 minutes 02 seconds and her overall finishing time both were better than Sri Lanka record in track 10000m ( 33:55.06) and 5000M (16:21.18) with which Hiruni indicates She is in top form going into next month’s National Championship.

Hiruni Will compete for the first time in Sri Lanka during a National track and field championship when she competes in the National Athletics Championship 2019. She will be running both the 10000m and 5000m races bidding her inclusion for the forthcoming South Asian Games in Nepal where her current form indicates that she is well on course for two National records during the meet.

Hiruni represented Sri Lanka during the 2017 IAAF World Championship in London and has already qualified to compete in her pet event, the Marathon in the 2019 IAAF World Championship to be held in Doha She was also the first Asian woman to complete. Commonwealth Games Marathon last time, finishing in 11th place.

Additionally, Hiruni has represented, Sri Lanka in the Asian Games, running in the 10000m in her first major international track event and is Sri Lanka’s, best bet to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
