Sri Lanka’s decathlon Iron Man Ajith Karunathilaka finished the day in second place at the Federation Cup Indian National Championship where he collected 3517 points at the end of day one, which included five out of Decathlon’s ten events.

Competing in Patiala, the Sri Lankan record holder for the event was given to earn a target of 7400 points which would grant him the chance to compete in the Asian Championship. But apart from an improved shot put with a performance of 10.89m, he could not replicate his best in some of his strong events such as the 100m, Long Jump and 400m: falling behind in his quest to qualify.

Ajith will face an uphill task in the competition now in the battle to reach the said qualification standards, and he will have to achieve personal bests in all five events tomorrow to keep his hopes alive.

Performance: 100m – 11.37 seconds

 Long Jump – 6.99m

Shot Put – 10.89m

High Jump – 1.77m

400m – 50.65 seconds

Tally – 3517 points
