Ten Athletes in Action on day two || Navishka, Kavindi in 400m Finals || Sadeepa, Milinda face a hectic day

Quarter miler Navishka Sandesh and sprinter Milinda Perera won their respective heats with ease while Sadeepa Henderson finished fourth in her heat to advance in the third Asian Youth Athletics Championship in Hong Kong on Friday (15th) .

Navishka was the most impressive of all, clocking a new personal best of 48.52 seconds to win the Boys’ 400m heat 02 and qualify for the finals as the second fastest runner in the heats. The 17 year old quarter miler hailing from St Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa will carry SL medal hopes when he competes in the finals to be worked off at 1.25 p.m. on Saturday .

The other Boys’ quarter miler Isuru Abeywardena could not keep up, and finished fifth in the first heat with a disappointing time of 50.57 seconds.

Meanwhile, female 400m runner Kavindi Edirisinghe also clocked an unimpressive 59.17 seconds in her heat and finished fifth, yet she made it to the finals as the 8th fastest runner in the heats. Her finals will be worked out at 1.16 p.m. Saturday .

Earlier, St. Mary’s College sprinter Milinda Perera clocked 10.90 seconds to win heat 03 in the Boys’ 100m, and with it he advanced to the 100m semi-finals to be worked off at 12.25 p.m. Saturday . Before that, however, he will have to compete in the 200m heats which will be worked off at 9.25 a.m. Also, if he happens to qualify in the 100m, those finals will be worked off at 2.35 p.m. SL time: making it a hectic day for the sprinter.

Gateway College sprinter Sadeepa Henderson too will face the same situation, with her 100m semi-finals being worked off at 12.05 p.m. SL time while the 200m heats will be worked off at 9.00 a.m. Following on the heels of these events, her 100m finals will be worked off at 2.25 p.m.

Apart from them, long jumper Hirusha Hashen will be in action in the Boys’ long jump while hurdler Amesha Hettiarachchi will compete in the 400m hurdle heats during the morning session. Also, middle distant runner Shanika Lakshani is set to compete in the 800m heats in the morning.

The afternoon session will consist of the Boys’ high jump finals where Roshen Dulmin will be in action, while Lahiru Garusinghe will compete in the Boys’ 2000m steeplechase and thrower Rumesh Tharanga will be in action in the discus throw which will be worked off at 1.30 p.m.

11.50 am    – 2000m Steeplechase Finals – Lahiru Gurusinghe

12.05 p.m. – 100m Girls’ Semifinals – Sadeepa Henderson

12.25 p.m. – 100m Boy’s Semifinals – Milinda Perera

01.16 p.m.   – 400m Girls’ Finals – Kavindi Edirisinghe

01.25 p.m.   – 400m Boys’ Finals – Navishka Sandesh

01.35pm      – Discuss Throw – Rumesh Tharanga

02.25pm      – 100m Girls’ Finals

02.35pm      – 100m Boy’s Finals
