Sri Lanka Women’s 4x100m relay team advanced to the finals of the 60th National Interstate Senior Athletics Championship started at Patiala . Relay quartet comprised three 2018 South Asian Junior Gold medalists in Amasha de Silva, Shelinda Jansen and Safiya Yamic. They were joined by teenager Medhani Jayamanne.

The team clocked 45.30 seconds, which is the 9th fastest SL 4x100m women relay time. The team had chaotic last few days ahead of traveling to India.

The journey took nearly 24 hours with long transit times in Doha and Delhi before reaching Chandigarh on Thursday afternoon. None of them were fit enough to compete, though they managed to ease into the finals.

It›s the first time the four girls ran a relay as a team, and the baton exchanges were a bit rusty, which is something they will have to quickly overcome in the finals which is on the 29th at 7.00 p.m., and by then they should have recovered as they have four days of rest.

Lakshika Sugandhi won the Bronze medal in the 100m hurdles clocking 13.90 seconds behind C.Kanimozhi (13.66) and Agasara Nandini (13.70). Sugandhi’s start was the fastest of the lot, but the Indian duo caught up and passed her midway.

Amasha de Silva and Shelinda Jansen have been entered to run individual 100m heats which will be worked off at 8.00 a.m. today, followed by the finals at 7.55 p.m.
