Dilshi Turns Tables Over Nadeesha in 400m

South Asian Games’ triple Gold medalist Dilshi Kumarasinghe turned tables over Nadeesha Ramanayake in a thrilling 400m tape finish at the National Athletics Trials 2021, which commenced at the Sugathadasa Stadium on wednesday.

Dilshi equaled her personal best in the event clocking 53.43 seconds to beat the defending National champ Nadeesha (53.48 sec) in the 400m women’s final. In the 400m men’s final defending National Champ Kalinga Kumarage clocked 45.99 seconds to win the event, while SAG Gold medalist Aruna Darshana finished third.

In the 100m finals defending men’s and women’s National Champs Himasha Eashan and Amasha de Silva won the events, with Amasha clocking 11.60 and Himasha clocking 10.38 seconds. However, both of them clocked better times in the heats.  Former Youth Olympic star Shelinda Jansen made a return to the track after February 2019 as she clocked a personal best 11.81 seconds in the heats, and finished second in the finals.

In the junior men’s 400m, Isuru Kaushalya clocked an amazing 47.24 seconds to achieve World junior Championship qualification standards beating Asian Youth Silver medalist Navishka Sandeesh to third place. Pasindu Gunawardana finished second.

Ovini Chandrasekara shattered the Sri Lanka junior women’s shot put record with a throw of 13.02m.

In the morning session, long jumper Anjani Pulwansa leapt a personal best of 6.26m to win the women’s final. St. Peter’s athlete Hirusha Hashen won the junior boys long jump event leaping 7.51m.
