Shelinda Jansen of Gateway College, Colombo dazzled the track, with a new meet record in the second day of the 20th International School Athletic Championship (ISAC) at the Sugathadasa Stadium .

Jansen, who created a wave in Athletics in 2018 with her mesmerizing run at the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, gave a glimpse of that run again yesterday when she clocked 11.94 seconds, in the U-20 Girls’ 100m event. The 19 year old was fast out of the blocks as she left her  opponents behind her to erase her own record of 12.08 seconds set last year.

Meanwhile, South Asian Games’ relay gold medalist Sadeepa Henderson of Gateway College bagged her first Gold medal with her leap made – a record breaking distance (5.59M) to set a new meet record in the U-20 Girls long jump.

Shelinda, who missed out the South Asian Games following an injury, during the selection trials last year, was in prime form, since her Youth Olympic heroics, and, both Jansen and Henderson will be eyeing to make the team for the forthcoming Asian Junior and World Junior Championships.

Another product of Gateway College Maleeka Amith, shone with two individual gold medals within the day as she established a new meet record in the U-18 girls’ 800m with a performance of 2.33.01.sec. Soon she was back on the track for the 1500M, for which she also clinched the gold medal, with a new meet record (5:25.31 Sec). Gateway’s Pasindu Gunawardena also established a new meet record (11.12Sec) in the U-18 100M event. Kavindu Bandara of Lyceum International school Wattala did not ease down as he did in the 200m where he clocked record breaking 10.78 seconds to win the boys 100m finals beating 200m gold medalist Santhush Weerasinghe comfortably .

The highlight of the day was the 4 x 100M. A consistent number of wins were registered by the teams of Gateway College Colombo (GCC), Lyceum International School Wattala (LISW) and Lyceum International School Panadura (LISP) in both Boys’ and Girls’ categories.

The day commenced with the ceremonial opening of the competition with the Managing Director of Gateway College, Mrs. Rohini Alles gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest.
