Sasindu, Shashikala Road Race Champs

Sasindu Sankalpa and Shashikala Dilshani, both from Makandura Central College, Matara won the Boys’ and Girls’ All-Island School Games’ Road Race worked off at Giriulla .

Sasindu, who won double gold medals in the 1500m and 5000m events at the Sir John Tarbat Senior Championship last Tuesday (10), returned to the road as he defeated K. Nisaban of Gamini MV and Lahiru Rukshan of Nakkawaththa National School, who finished second and third, to win the 14km race.

Shashikala, who set a new meet record in the walking race event at the Sir John Tarbat Senior Championship last Wednesday (11) returned to distance running as she clocked 1 hour 00.57 seconds in the 14km race to win the event, almost two minutes ahead of her closest rival Hashini Madushika of Dewapathiraja MV Galle, who clocked 1:02.56. Dilmini Sudusinghe of Narandeniya National School finished third with 1:03.24.

Both Sasindu and Shashikala trained under the same coach, Samanthilaka Halpage.
