Briana Williams new national record could have been quicker

Jamaica’s Briana Williams is the fastest junior in her country’s history after her 100-metre run at the Jacksonville Open on Saturday.

Williams, running in section one of two, bested her Trinidad and Tobago teammate Khalifa St Fort, to stop the clock in 11.10 seconds, bettering Kiara Grant’s national junior record of 11.11, done in May.

St Fort stopped the clock in 11.65 seconds to finish a distant second but well ahead of Devynne Charlton who failed to break 11 seconds, finishing in 12.07.

But what is scary about the time Williams put down ahead of Jamaica’s National trials in June, is the fact that her coach believes she could have gone faster.

“I’m excited about next week. She hasn’t run since Carifta so I felt like if she ran half decent here she’s ready,” said Ato Boldon.

“Well, she’s ready because this wasn’t a perfectly executed race and she stopped at the wrong line because they ran the race the opppsite way to ensure it would be a tailwind,” he went on to explain.

According to Boldon, Williams’ preparation for the World Championships later this year, is going perfectly.

“Briana is ready for the challenge that awaits her June 20. Her season could not have gone more to plan,” he said.

Williams, who would return in the 200 metres to clock a winning 22.95 seconds, was also pleased with the performance.

“I had a good execution and start but I never thought that I ran 11.10. It felt more like an 11.3, especially on this hot day. But I’m very proud of myself. May was a month of tough training and it has surely paid off.”
