Junior Sri Lanka athletic team hold the edge over India in many events going by their recent performances as the two teams will be going head to head during the South Asian Junior Athletic Championships (SAJAC ) to be held on 5 and 6 May at the Sugathadasa Stadium Colombo.

Sri Lanka selected their team based on the performances of the junior National Athletic championships held at the same venue last week while India selected the team based on the performance of the junior Federation Cup held recently.

Based on the performance India hold the edge over Sri Lanka in 100m as Gurindervir Singh clocked a record breaking 10.47 seconds at the junior federation cup where Sri Lanka’s winner Maris Stella’s Chanuka Sandeepa only clocked 10.84 seconds. Men’s 4x100m relay team’s chances too seems slim for Sri Lanka as Indian 100m relay quarter has faster runners than SL.

But from 200m onwards Sri Lanka holds the edge as Aruna Darshan clocked 21.38 seconds in 200m compare to India’s best 200m runner Akash Kumar who clocked 21.53 seconds.

In the 400m Aruna Darshan (46.59 sec) and Pasindu Kodikara (46.70 seconds) both hold the edge over Indian quarter miler Gaurav (46.93 seconds) while 4x400m relay team too has the edge for SL as all top four finishers of junior nationals had achieved IAAF World Junior qualification.

High Jumper Tharindu Dasun (2.11) holds the clear edge over Santhosh Manikandan (2.06m) while Pasindu Kodikara will eye for double medals as he has the superior time in the 400m hurdles (52.90 sec) over India’s Aman (53.14 sec).

In women’s events SL girls hold the edge over India from 100m to 400m. Amasha de Silva (12.01) holds the edge over India’s Chaitrali Gujar (12.05) while the girls 4x100m relay team too has a better time than the Indian quartet. In 200m both Amasha, Sharmila Jan and Shelinda Jansen has a chance for a clean sweep.

In 400m Dilshi Kumarasinghe has a clear vision for a Gold medal as she is the only sub 55 seconds runner in the event while Sachini Divyanjai too has a chance for a podium finish. Girls 4x400m relay quartet too has a chance for a golden run despite India sending their Olympian quarter miler Jisna Mathew for the event.

Long jumper Ridma Nishadi will be eyeing for a gold medal. In high jump 15 year old I.N. Pallegama of Ibbagamuwa Central leapt 1.71m bettering the height done by the under-18 as well as under-20 jumpers and she has equalled the personal best of two Indian jumpers Abhinaya Shetty and Greacena G. Merry Glistus.
