Kalinga stuns Dilip with PB 46.08 seconds

Quarter miler Kalinga Kumarage stunned the arena by beating the favorite Dilip Ruwan to clock a personal best of 46.08 seconds to win the much awaited men’s 400m final at the first national trials for the Asian Games concluded at Sugathadasa stadium .

He also marked himself as the fourth fastest 400m runner in Sri Lanka behind Sugath Thilakarathne, Rohan Pradeep Kumara and Prasanna Amarasekara.

Dilip, the National Champion, South Asian Games bronze medallist and Asian Championship finalist had two sub 47 second races in the heats and semi-finals clocking 46.53 seconds in the semi-finals. It was evident that it’s going to be a thrilling final as Dilip was itching to renew his previous personal best (46.41 seconds).

“I tried to balance the race in both heats and semi-finals but it didn’t work out. So I decided to run at full stretch from the gun point in the final which paved off,” said Kalinga who stunned Dilip in the final.

The 25 year old Kalinga was in the 5th lane while Dilip was on the 4th and Kalinga took off from the gun point and had a clear edge coming off the second bend passing the 300m mark and Dilip brought out his customary sprint in the last 100m but he couldn’t pass Kalinga like he did in many a previous occasion and this time Kalinga too ran a good sprint in the last 100m and Dilip too finished with a personal best of 46.39 seconds.

Trained by Sunil and Badra Gunawardana, Kumarage got married last year and said only difference for him from previous years was diet controlling which he started this year.

Meanwhile in the women’s 400m, Upamalika Ratnakumari clocked her personal best to win the race in an amazing 53. 31 seconds while Nadeesha Ramanayaka too clocked her personal best of 54.18 sec. Para Athlete Amara Indumathi who competed in the same event clocked her personal best (1:02.92 secs) even though she finished the race in the 8th place.

Himasha Eashan won the 100m finals with time of 10.53 seconds .

Lakshika Sugandhi , the heptathlon SL record holder had an amazing day as she won the 100m with 11.98 seconds while also won the heptathlon .

Hammer Thrower Ayesha Maduwanthi threw her personal best (48.62m ) to win the race while two triple jumpers , Vidusha Lakshani and Sanjaya Jayasinghe too performed their seasonal best leaping 13.42m and 16.34m respectively .

Meanwhile there were few under 20 trials for the Junior South Asian Championship during the day where high jumper from Mahinda College Galle Tharindu Dasun leaped 2.11m

 

Himasha Eashan won the 100m final with a time of 10.53 seconds.

Lakshika Sugandhi, the heptathlon SL record holder had an amazing day as she won the 100m final in 11.98 secs while also winning the heptathlon.

Hammer thrower Ayesha Maduwanthi threw her personal best of (48.62m ) to win the event while the two triple jumpers, Vidusha Lakshani and Sanjaya Jayasinghe too performed their seasonal best leaps with 13.42m and 16.34m respectively.

Meanwhile there were a few under 20 trials for the Junior South Asian Championship during the day where high jumper from Mahinda College Galle Tharindu Dasun had a jump of 2.11m

 

Nasty Accident

Decathlon athlete Danushka Perera was taken to hospital as he faced a nasty accident during the pole vault. Perera who attempted a jump did not fall on the mattress but to the upright board on the left of the pole vault mattress and was bleeding from the head where the medical team immediately took him to hospital.
