Middle distance runner Nilani Ratnayake clocked a personal best in the 1500m to finish second at the “Road to Asian Games 2018” Invitational test event continued at Jakarta yesterday.
Nilani clocked 4 minutes 19.25 seconds and finished only behind Chithra Palakeezh of India, while Champika Dilrukshi finished fourth in the same race. In the long jump, seasoned jumper Janaka Prasad Wimalasiri leapt 7.82m to finish third. The Asian Indoor Bronze medallist finished behind Zhang Yaoguang (7.96m) of China and LIN Hung-Min (7.89m) of Chinese Taipei. Dhanuka Liyanapathirana finished 5th with a 7.62m leap, while Amila Jayasiri who holds the SL record finished 10th and failed to qualify in the best of eight rounds.
His only legal leap in the qualifying round was 7.22m. Decathlon athlete Ajith Karunathilaka finished second with 6,413 points. He was confused at the start of the 100m where he stopped after the gun was fired and then ran again, which resulted in him losing about 500 points which would have kept him close to 7,000 points. He could only clock 14.37 seconds in the 100m which he normally runs in under 11.5 seconds. (AK) Captions Nilani Ratnayaka Ajith Karunathilaka Janaka Wimalasiri
