SL Sprinters flops at Asian Championship
It was a disappointing day for Sri Lanka at 22nd Asian Athletics Championship as none of the athletes could perform as expected where all of them finished outside podium in their respective events. Two sprinters Himasha Eashan and Vinoj Suranjaya de Silva finished fourth in their respective semi-finals with time of 10.53 seconds and 10.44 seconds as both of them was out of 100m finals .
In the 400m , Dilip Ruwan competing in the 8th lane finished fifth with 47.50 seconds which won by India’s Muhammad Anas with time of 45.77 seconds. Dilip had a strange race as he did not run well first 250-300 m of the race specially when considering he was competing in the outer lane where he had saved lot of energy for last 100m where he did very fast finish. but his tactics did not pay off . Ajith Premakumara finsihed 8th . In the women’s 400m , young Nirmali Madushika finished fifth competing in her first Senior International championship .
Meanwhile Triple jumper Sanjaya Jayasinghe and Dulanjali Ranasinghe had to jump trough the rain which affected their performance . Sanjaya finished 6th with 15.97m while Dulanjali finished 10th clearing 1.75m . Dulanjali had to face heavy shower when he was attempting 1.80m where she demanded to delay the jump due to heavy rain but she had to keep asking for several minutes in the middle of heavy rain before refree finally decide to go to the pavilion for while which halted the event. when ressume Dulanjali cound not performe any more well as she did not clear 1.75. Sanjaya Jayasinghe meanwhile Sanjaya Jayasinghe finished sixth with 15.97m.
In the morning Men’s 4X100m relay team finished fourth in the first semi-finals as well as fourth overall clocking 39.69 seconds. The relay quarter had change of laps with Himasha Eashan who used to do the first lap running the second one while Mohommad Ashroff who did last lap in last Asian Championship and second in South Asian Games doing the first lap.
Ashroff wasn’t up his mark at first bend as when Himasha got the baton he had lot of ground to make in the race. In the other heat host India team who was leading the race was disqualified as they went over the line in last baton exchange due to mix up. There will be lap change in the finals with Ashroff set to run second lap with Himasha in the start .
Nevertheless Scheduling of 4x100m relay heat raised some eye brows where relay was scheduled in the morning with semi-finals and finals of 100m schedule to work off in the afternoon. It’s been universal practice to give priority for individual event of athletes where relay of particular discipline be it 100m or 400m starts after the finals of individual events.

False start drama once again
Another false start drama filled day saw two false start in the men’s 100m where Asian record holder Femi Ogunode was beaten by Iranian Hasan Taftian with time of modest 10.25 second to become fastest man in the championship . Ogunode obviously not happy about the proceeding as two false start took much time where athletes had to stay in the continuous rain which affected their performance. In the women’s 100m defending champion Kazakhstan’s Viktoria Zyabkin defended her title with 11.39 seconds .
