Jaffna’s vaulting queen Anitha Jagatheshwaran once again renewed her Sri Lanka record in the women’s pole vault for the third time clearing a height of 3.45m on the first day of the National Athletics trials continued at Diyagama yesterday.

Anitha who is soon expected to be an undergraduate of the Sabaragamuwa University, last eclipsed the Sri Lanka record in her home town at last year’s National Sports Festival with 3.41m, while equaling that record in Kandy during the all island school’s games.

“It will be hard to do training and studying in Sabaragamuwa, especially with lack of facilities and coaches to do the pole vault there,” said Anitha about her growing concern after the record breaking performance. But just a few minutes later she took the bus to return to Jaffna which will be a whole night’s journey for her and her coach Subash.

In the men’s pole vault SAG record holder Ishara Sandaruwan cleared 4.90m to win the event, while Hasith Nirmal returned a good time of 14.51 seconds to win the 110m hurdles.

Meanwhile, in other events, sprinter Rumeshika Rathnayake made a good start for the year clocking 24.12 seconds to win the 200m, while Vinoj Suranjaya de Silva won the men’s event with ease in 21.26 seconds.

Ridma Nishadi, the 18 year old hailing from Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda, impressed in the morning with a leap of 6.08m in the women’s long jump to win the event over many of her seniors.

The men’s long jump saw close competition where Dhanuka Liyanapathirana emerged victorious with 7.74m leap beating Mohammad Mifran who was placed second with 7.73m.

Today will be the last day of the trials.
