Sri Lanka Mixed 4x400m in World Relay 2025
|The Sri Lankan mixed 4x400m relay team competed at the World Athletics Relays 2025 held in Guangzhou, China on May 10 and 11, aiming to qualify for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan this September.
In the first round, Sri Lanka was unable to finish the race due to a minor injury sustained by the first lap runner, Aruna Darshana. However, the team was given another chance to qualify through the second qualifying round.
For the second heat, Sadew Rajakaruna replaced the injured Aruna Darshana. The team lineup was Kalinga Kumarage, Nadeesha Ramanayaka, Sadew Rajakaruna, and Harshani Fernando.
Unfortunately, Sri Lanka finished last in their heat, placing 7th out of 7 with a time of 3:20.61. Only the top three teams in each heat secured spots for the Tokyo World Championships.
Among the Sri Lankan athletes, Nadeesha Ramanayaka stood out with a solid performance, clocking 53.38 seconds in her lap. Kalinga Kumarage ran the first lap in 46.43 seconds, Sadew Rajakaruna followed with 47.12 seconds, and Harshani Fernando, who recently recorded a personal best of 53.10 seconds, managed 53.68 seconds in her leg.
Later in the evening, the USA won the gold medal in the event, with Australia and Kenya earning silver and bronze respectively.
Despite the setback, the experience gained will be valuable for Sri Lanka’s athletes as they continue to build for future international competitions.
