Ajith sets new Sri Lanka record- Vidusha wins silver in triple

Decathlon champion Ajith Karunathilaka excelled in Bangkok as he sealed a bronze medal setting a new national record in the event with 6919 points as Sri Lanka finished off with a gold, three silvers and a bronze medal in the Thailand Open Athletics Championship held at Thammasat University stadium.

Karunathilaka training under former pole vaulter turned coach Rohitha Fernando, increased his personal best in the pole vault clearing 4.70M which helped him to renew the SL record of 6884 points which he set during the first national trials held in Diyagama last April.

on the other events of the day Triple jumper Vidusha Lakshani sealed a silver medal with a leap of 13.43m in the women’s triple jump. The youngster who leapt 13.64m during the first national trials in Diyagama renewing her own SL record is one of Sri Lanka’s bright athletics stars for the future.

Earlier in the meet 3000 m steeple chase runner Nilani Rathnayake, long jumper Dhanuka Liyanapathirana won silver medals in their respective events while the only gold medal was won by Kalinga Kumarage on Wednesday.
