After struggling with injuries after winning the world indoor 1500m, Matt Centrowitz didn’t race once in April or May of last year. Fully healthy and now with an Olympic gold medal on his neck, Centro is running a more traditional outdoor season this year–beginning with the Sun Angel Classic, ou can watch Centrowitz race the mile live at 11:46 PM Eastern time on Saturday, April 8, against a deep field that includes David Torrence and Jeremy Rae.
Last year’s season openers was a 1:47 and 3:41 double at the Portland Track Festival; two months later, his fitness had progressed to the point of winning Olympic gold.
Centro is much fitter now than he was then, and Saturday night’s mile should be quick. He ran a then-world leading 3:55 mile in Boston in late January, and was seventh in the Millrose two mile in mid-February. That’s the last time we saw him race.
This will be the earliest he’s opened an outdoor season since turning professional. Here are his four season openers from 2012-2015, according to Tilastopaja:
June 1, 2012: 3:57 mile
April 27, 2013: 2:53 1200m leg
April 19, 2014: 3:41 1500m
April 21, 2015: 4:04 road mile
