South Asia’s fastest man and record holder Yupun Abeykoon will compete in the 100m heats today at the Tokyo Olympic Games. On the second day of the athletics schedule, he will compete at 4.15 p.m. Sri Lanka time. He will have a daunting task of qualifying among the best 24 to get into the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, 800m runner Nimali Liyanarachchi had a disappointing outing in the 800m, as she finished last in her heat.

With a personal best of 2 minutes 2.58 seconds, Nimali did not have a good lead up for the Olympics, as her wild card was received at the last minute. Despite that, the 32-year-old finished the event in 2 minutes 10.23 seconds, and finished 43rd of 45 athletes who ran in six heats.

Italy based sprinter Yupun Abeykoon had two amazing seasons, where he kept shattering record after a record, and is now set to achieve a feat which none of the South Asian males has achieved in history.

The South Asian record holder in the 100m is ranked 49th in the Olympic ranking and 51st  in the male 100m ranking this year, and is the only  South Asian male to achieve Olympic qualification for Olympics in 100m ever.

To put it into context, according to the World Bank there is a population of nearly 1.9 billion in South Asia now, which is more than 24% of the World’s population, out of which 51% or more are males, and out of that only one male was able to achieve the 100m Olympic qualification feat for the  Olympics.

The 26-year-old hailing from Dankotuwa, first represented Sri Lanka at the South Asian Junior Championship in Ranchi (2013) as a triple jumper. He then gave up jumping and focused on the 100m, with little success in Sri Lanka. Yupun got help from his family to get to a training facility in Fiammegialle Sports Centre, Rome, Italy, where he started getting better by the day.

In 2016, watching Olympics on TV, Yupun promised himself that he will not just watch the next one on TV. His Personal Best at the time was 10.58 seconds, a time which was nowhere near Olympic qualification standard, but four years later he is Sri Lanka’s only male (and also entire South Asia) to actually qualify for the Olympic Games.

Trained under former Olympian Claudio Licciardello, Yupun missed several opportunities during the last four years, which included events like the Asian Championship, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, since he wasn’t really focusing on National level trials, and his training schedule clashed with Sri Lankan competition season due to winter In Italy. But all Yupun wanted was to qualify for this Olympics; hence, even when he missed out on participating at those major championship, it did not bother him.

Earlier, Yupun trained under coach Raparelli in Italy, and in Sri Lanka he trained under coaches Subadra and Dinesh Bandara when he was studying at Pannala National College, and then under Chaminda Sampath after he changed schools for his A/L (St. Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa), until he left for Italy in 2015.

He won a Bronze medal with the 4x100m relay team at the World Military Games in 2015, and since then he only represented Sri Lanka in 2019 when he anchored the 4x100m relay team to win the Gold medal at the South Asian Games.

Dr Lal Ekanayake, Sports Physician of the Institute of Sports Medicine, has been appointed Director General of the Institute of Sports Medicine under the Ministry of Sports. He will assume duties on Thursday (20th).

Dr. Ekanayaka is one of the most popular sports physicians among the national athletes. He has received numerous accolades for his amazing service over the years and has become the number one choice of National athletes for medical advice.

Recently he did a tremendous job at the South Asian Games 2019 helping the Sri Lankan contingent overcome the dengue epidemic during their stay in Nepal. Dr. Ekanayaka was seen going from hospital to hospital and spending time (day and night) among the Sri Lankan athletes, while also giving advice and taking measures to safeguard the others from the illness.

His tremendous service during the Games saw all the athletes who were hospitalized – and even admitted to Emergency Care Units when critical – recovering and traveling back to the country safe and sound.

As the IAAF World Championship gets closer day by day we collected and analyzed data to track the past performance and current progress of individual athletes with a view to applying statistical probability to predict the future wave of stars who will supplant today’s legends in each event and field – whether they will emerge from the crop of youthful Diamond League/World Relay contenders, defending champions from the class of 2017 or 2019 or from among upset-creating outsiders.

The sphere of track and field has gone through a period of immense change in terms of its iconic athletes or superstars during the last three years, with the names of favourite heroes being replaced by unfamiliar new ones … The sprints will be missing the greatest speedster of all time, Usain Bolt who took the sport to a different level and dominated it throughout the last decade before calling it a day with a last hurrah in the 2017 World Championships. The 400m Olympic champion and world record holder Wayde van Niekerk won’t feature in this year’s WC either due to injury, while distance running great Sir Mo Farah has already retired from the track and age also seems to be catching up with the world’s fastest man since 2107, 37-year old Justin Gatlin.

Several young guns have come forward to dominate world athletics during last two years, with the likes of Noah Lyles and Michael Norman leading the pack in the 200m and 400m events, Juan Miguel Echevarría leaping to mind in the long jump and 400m hurdlers Abderrahman Samba and Rai Benjamin being on top of their game; but all of these rising stars are still searching for their maiden world championship title.

Meanwhile, several current champions too have maintained peak performance that is equal to fending off challenges from younger athletes. Top-caliber veterans such as Christian Taylor, Sam Kendricks, Tomas Walsh, Omar McLeod, Karsten Warholm and Johannes Vetter are still formidable frontrunners and will be aiming to retain their titles against all comers for the foreseeable future, while 100m silver medalist from London, Christian Coleman is turbo-charged to assume the mantle of the world’s fastest man in 2019.

We will also undoubtedly see Eliud Kipchoge, who is fresh from his record shattering run in London earlier this year and in red-hot form, going for his second world title in the marathon.

So who will climb to the top of the charts in Doha this year? Will it be the Diamond League champion, the defending champion, a world leader in 2018 or 2019 or a shock winner – a fresh new name in the game? Go through the following stats, pick the one you predict will win and keep your fingers cross for a few more days.

37 year old US sprinter Justin Gatlin pipped Japan’s Yoshihide Kiryu to win the men’s 100 metres as fellow American Michael Norman fired a world championship warning with a superb 200m at the Golden Grand Prix Osaka on Sunday.

The 37-year-old Gatlin produced a strong finish to clock 10 seconds flat, the reigning world champion dipping at the line to edge out Kiryu by a hundredth of a second at the IAAF world challenge meet in Osaka.

Indonesia’s world under-20 champion Lalu Muhammad Zohri broke his own national record as he took third in 10.03 — the fastest time ever recorded by an athlete from Southeast Asia.

While Gatlin targets one last hurrah at the world championships in Doha later this year, Norman laid down a marker by winning the men’s 200m in a meet record 19.84 seconds, shaving 0.03 off the mark Namibia’s Frankie Fredericks set 20 years ago.

The runaway victor, who last month clocked a personal best of 43.45 in the 400m, left Yang Chun-Han trailing in his wake, the Taiwanese runner-up in 20.50.

Ominously for his rivals, Norman insisted that he can still get faster.

“I feel as though there are multiple areas I can improve on,” said the 21-year-old.

“I didn’t feel as though the intensity that I usually have during a 200m was there.”

Meanwhile, the Japanese men’s 4x100m relay quartet made amends after their disqualification at last week’s World Relays in Yokohama by beating Team USA into second place.

Clips of Kiryu fumbling and then catching the baton in mid-air went viral, but the Japanese — shock Rio Olympic silver medallists behind Usain Bolt’s Jamaica — made no mistake this time as Kiryu anchored them home in a world-leading 38.00 seconds.

The Americans, who had Gatlin on their second leg, took silver in 38.73.
