තායිවාන විවෘත මලල ක්‍රීඩා ශූරතාවලියේ දී නැවතත් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට රිදී පදක්කමක් දිනා දීමට සමත් වූ නදීෂා දිල්හානී ලේකම්ගේ පසුගිව වසර 18 ක කාලයක් පුරා සිය දක්ෂතා ඒකාකාරීම පවත්වාගෙන යාමට සමත්වනවා.

ක්‍රීඩකයෙකුට හෝ ක්‍රීඩිකාවකට ඇති ඉහළම බලාපොරොත්තුව වන ඔලිම්පික් සිහිනය පසුගිය වසරේදී සැබෑ කරගන්නත් ඇය සමත් වුණා.

වසර 17ක ආසියානු ක්‍රීඩා උළෙල පදක්කම් සිහිනය සැබෑ කරමින් 2023 වසරේ පැවති ආසියානු ක්‍රීඩා උලෙලේ දී පළමු පදක්කම දිනා දුන්නේ නදීශා දිල්හානි ලේකම්ගේ. ඒ් ලක්මව රිදී පදක්කමකින් සරසමින්.

එම වසරේම ආසියානු මලල ක්‍රීඩා ශූරතාවලියේදී ද ලේකම්ගේ ලෝකඩ පදක්කමක් හිමිකරගත්තා.

ඒ් වගේම 2024 වසරේ පැවති ආසියානු විසිකිරීමේ ශූරතාවලියේදීද ලෝකඩ පදක්කම තමන් නමට ලියා ගැනීමට ඇයට හැකි වුණා.

මේවනවිට 38 හැවිරිදි වියේ පසුවන ලේකම්ගේ ගේ ගමන සුන්දර නැහැ.

2007 සිට ජ්‍යේශ්ඨ ක්‍රීඩකාවක් ලෙස ගමන ආරම්භ කළ ද ඇයට ආසියානු මට්ටමේ ජයග්‍රහණයක් හිමි වුණේ 2016 වසරේ දීයි.

ඒ මොක්පෝ ආසියානු විසි කිරීමේ ශූරතාවලියේ දී ලැබූ රන් පදක්කම සමගින්.

නදීෂා ලේකම්ගේ 2017 වසරේ පැවැති ආසියානු මලල ක්‍රීඩා ශූරතාවලියේ දී ද රිදී පදක්කමක් දිනා ගැනීමට සමත් වුණා.

ඇහැළියගොඩ පරකඩුව ප්‍රදේශයෙන් ක්‍රීඩාවට දායාද වූ නදීෂා දිල්හානිව මලල ක්‍රීඩාවට හඳුන්වා දුන් පළමු පුහුණුකරු අරුණ ශාන්ත මහතායි.

ඉන් අනතුරුව රොද්‍රිගෝ මහතා යටතේ පුහුණුවීම් කළ ලේකම්ගේ රොද්‍රිගෝ මහතාගේ අභාවයෙන් පසුව හිටපු හෙල්ල විසි කිරීමේ ශූරයෙකු වූ කිංස්ලි ගුණතිලක මහතා යටතේ කෙටි කලක් පුහුණු කටයුතු සිදු කළ අතර අනතුරුව මාධව සෙනරත් බණ්ඩාර මහතා යටතේත් වර්තමානයේ හිටපු හෙල්ල විසි කිරීමේ ශූරයෙකු වන ප්‍රදීප් නිශාන්ත මහතා පුහුණුවීම් සිදුකරනවා.

නදීෂා දිල්හානී ඇයගේ මුල් පුහුණුකරු අරුණ ශාන්ත මහතා ලේකම්ගේ ගැන පැවසූවේ මේවගේ කතා කිහිපයක්…

“මීට වසර 20 කට පමණ පෙර මුලින්ම නදීෂාව හෙල්ල විසි කිරීමට යොමු කළේ. ඒ කාලෙ කොල්ල වගේ, ගස් උඩමයි. නිවාසාන්තර තරග තියෙද්දි ගොක් කොළ කපන්න ගස් නගින්නෙ නදීෂා. කවදාවත් කරාබු දෙකක් දාන්නෙ නෑ. ටයි එකක් දාන්නෙ නෑ. රබර් සෙරෙප්පු දෙක දාගෙන එන්නෙ. හරිම දඩබ්බර දරුවෙක්. තිබුණු හැම ක්‍රීඩාවම කළා. මුලින් ම මට හම්බවෙන කොට උස පැන්නෙ. ධාවන තරගවලිනුත් පළාත් මට්ටමටම ගියා. නෙට්බොල් ෆුට්බොල් රගර් හැම ක්‍රීඩාවක්ම කරා. නෙට්බෝල් තරගයක දී මැයගේ ජීවිතය වෙනස්වුණා.”

ඇය හෙල්ල විසි කිරීම ඉසව්වට තෝරා ගෙන ඇත්තේ ද අහඹු සිදුවීමක ප්‍රථිඵලයක් ලෙසයි.

“දවසක් නෙට්බෝල් තරගයක දී, නදීශා මෙහා කොනේ ඉඳල එහා කොනට තනි අතින් පන්දුව විසි කළා. කුඩා වයසෙදි ඒ වගේ දෙයක් කිරීමේ විශේෂත්වයක් තිබුණ. ඒ අනුව තමයි හෙල්ල විසි කිරීමට මැයව යොමු කළේ. වයස අවුරුදු 15 න් පහළ පළාත් වාර්තාවක් බිඳ හෙළීමට ඇය සමත් වීම ඇයගේ ක්‍රීඩා දිවිය වෙනස් කළ සන්ධිස්තානයක් වුණා.”

“මෙයා පොඩි කාලෙ කොල්ලෙක් වගේ, එක පාරක් ජාතික තරගාවලියකට ඇවිත්, ලිඳෙන් වතුර අදින පනිට්ටුව ළිඳට වැටුණ කියල පනිට්ටුව ගන්න ළිඳට බැහැල. ගුරුවරු බයවෙලා මට දැනුම් දුන්නම මම හිතුවෙ මෙයා ළිඳට වැටිල කියල ඇවිත් බලන කොට ළිඳට බැහැල පනිට්ටුව අරන් ගොඩට එනව. ඒ වගේ වැඩ කරපු ළමයෙක් දැන් තැන්පත් වෙලා තමන්ගේ අරමුණ වෙනුවෙන් කැපවෙලා වැඩ කරන්නෙ. කලින්නම් මෙයාව ට්‍රේනිං ගෙන්නන එක හරිම වදයක් කවදාවත් වෙලාවට එන්නෙ නෑ. පස්සෙ පස්සෙ මෙයා තරම් උවමනාවෙන් කවුරුත් අවෙ නෑ. වෙලාවක් කිව්වොත් වෙලාවට එනව. කවදාවත් වරද්දන්නෙ නෑ. අසනීපයක් තිබුණත් ට්‍රේනිං එනව.” පළමු පුහුණූකරු අරුණ ශාන්ත මහතා ඇයගේ කුඩා කාලය ගැන ප්‍රකාශ කළේ එලෙසයි.

පරකඩුව නාරද මධ්‍ය මහා විද්‍යාලයෙන් මූලික අධ්‍යාපනය ලැබූ නදීශා දිල්හානී, පසුව 2003 වසරේ දී ඇරේපොළ ශ්‍රී මහින්ද විද්‍යාලයට ඇතුළත් වන්නේ අරුණ ශාන්ත මහතාට ඇහැළියගොඩ ධර්මපාල විද්‍යාලයට ලැබුණු මාරුවීමක් හේතුවෙනි.

පසුගිය වසර 20 වැනි කාලයක් ඇයව රැක බලාගන්නේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා යුද්ධ හමුදාවයි.

වයස යනු දක්ෂයාට ඉලක්කමක් පමණයි.

Sprinter Aruna Darshana has confirmed his fitness for the upcoming Asian Athletics Championship 2025 with an impressive performance at a fitness test conducted in Colombo yesterday where Sri Lanka Athletics has officially named a 20-member squad for the championship, set to take place in South Korea from 27 to 31 May.

Darshana completed 300 metres in 33.41 seconds at the Sugathadasa Stadium, proving his recovery from an injury sustained at the recent World Relay Championship, where he had to withdraw from the Men’s 4x400m Relay after just a few strides.
The team will be led by Dilhani Lekamge, who won a Bronze Medal in the previous edition of the Asian Championship and Olympian Sumedha Ranasinghe. Sri Lanka secured three Gold Medals, two Silver, and three Bronze Medals at the last championship, finishing fourth in the medal tally behind Japan, China, and India.
The Men’s 4x400m Relay Team, which clinched Gold at the 2023 Asian Championship in Thailand, will aim to defend their title. They set a new national and championship record, clocking 3 minutes 01.56 seconds in the process. However, only Aruna Darshana and Kalinga Kumarage remain from the Gold-winning quartet, with three new athletes replacing Pabasara Niku, Rajitha Rajakaruna, and Pasindu Kodikara.
Quarter-miler Nadeesha Ramanayaka is Sri Lanka’s only returning individual Gold Medallist, competing in the Women’s 400m.
The squad includes four relay teams competing in the Men’s 4x100m, Men’s 4x400m, Women’s 4x400m, and Mixed 4x400m events.
The team features four Olympians in Aruna Darshana (Paris 2024), Yupun Abeykoon (Tokyo 2021), Dilhani Lekamge (Paris 2024) and Sumedha Ranasinghe (Rio 2016).
Ranasinghe ranks second in this year’s Asian top list with a personal best of 85.78m, while Rumesh Tharanga follows closely in third place with an 85.41m throw. The only athlete ahead of them is India’s Olympic Gold Medallist Neeraj Chopra, who leads the rankings with a season-best throw of 90.23m.
However, former Gold Medallist Tharushi Karunarathne will not be competing this year. Karunarathne won Gold in the 800m and two silver medals in the Women’s and Mixed 4x400m relays at the 2023 edition.
Initially excluded by Sri Lanka Athletics due to a disappointing performance at the Dubai Grand Prix, the Men’s 4x100m team was reinstated after a successful appeal to the National Selection Committee. The athletes argued that they had not competed together as a team since 2019, which affected their Dubai performance. SL team finished behind both India A and B teams in Dubai.

2000 වර්ෂයේ ජනවාරි මස 28 දින පේරාදෙණියේ දී උපත ලැබූ ඔහු නමින් චමෝද් මහිංසස යෝධසිංහ නම් වේ.කෑගල්ල දොරවක සිරිනිවාස මහා විද්‍යාලයෙන් මූලික අධ්‍යාපනය ලැබූ මොහු පසුව උසස් අධ්‍යාපනය සහ මලල ක්‍රීඩා හැකියාව දියුණු කර ගැනීමේ අදිටනින් 2014 වර්ෂයේදී කෑගල්ල ශාන්ත මරියා විද්‍යාලයට ඇතුළත් වන්නේ ප්‍රවීණ මලල ක්‍රීඩා පුහුණුකරුවෙකු වන ලලිත් ලියනගේ මහතාගේ අධීක්ෂණත් සමගයි.

2018 වර්ෂයේදී මෙරට දී පැවැත්වුණු දකුණු ආසියානු කනිෂ්ඨ මලල ක්‍රීඩා තරගාවලියේ මී.100 ඉසව්වේ පස් වන ස්ථානයට පත් වීමට ඔහුට හැකියාව ලැබුණි.එම අත්දැකීම් සියල්ලේ එකතුවෙන් ඔහු 2019 වර්ෂයේ පැවති ජාතික කනිෂ්ඨ මලල ක්‍රීඩා තරගාවලියේදී මී.100 ඉසව්වෙන් තත්.10.90ක කාලයක් වාර්තා කර එම වසරේ ජාතික කනිෂ්ඨ ශූරයා බවට පත් විය. එසේම එම වසරේ දී පැවති දකුණු ආසියානු ක්‍රීඩා උළෙලට ද මීටර් 100 සහාය දිවීමේ කණ්ඩායමේ සාමාජිකයෙකු ලෙස සහභාගීවීමට අවස්ථාව හිමිවිය.

එමෙන්ම 2019 වර්ෂයේදී ම පැවති ශ්‍රීමත් ජෝන් ටාබට් ජ්‍යෙෂ්ඨ මලල ක්‍රීඩා තරගාවලියේ මීටර් 100 ඉසව්ව තත් 10.80කින් නිම කරමින් රන් පදක්කමත්, දුර පැනීමේ ඉසව්වේ මී.7.43ක තම හොදම දක්ෂතාවය ද සමගින් රන් පදක්කමත් දිනා ගැනීමට ඔහු සමත් වූයේ කණිෂ්ඨ ධාවන පථයම තමාටම වෙන් කර ගනිමිනි.එසේම එම තරගාවලියේ දක්ෂතම ක්‍රීඩකයා,දක්ෂතම දුර පනින්නා සහ දක්ෂතම පිටිය ක්‍රීඩකයා වශයෙන් සම්මාන තුනක් ලබන්නටද එදින ඔහු සමත් විය.

එම ජයග්‍රහණ වලින්ම ඔහු කනිෂ්ඨ අවධියේ සිටම කෙතරම් දක්ෂතා දක්වා ඇත්දැයි සිතා ගත හැකිය.

2019 වර්ෂයේදී ප්‍රථම වතාවට ජාතික ශූරතාවලියකට සහභාගී වන ඔහුට මී.100 ඉසව්වෙන් හිමි වන්නේ පස්වන ස්ථානයයි.පෙර වැරදි පන්නරයක් කොට ගනිමින් 2020 ජාතික ශූරතාවලියේදී සිව්වන ස්ථානයටත් මේ වසරේ පැවති ජාතික ශූරතාවලියේදී තුන්වන ස්ථානයටත් පත් වෙයි.මුල සිටම ඔහුගේ ගමන් මග දෙස බැලීමේදී ඔහු දිනක රටෙහි නම යන මී.100 ධාවකයෙකු වෙතැයි නිසැකයෙන් කිව හැකිය.

ඒ එසේ කිව හැක්කේ ඔහු පියවරෙන් පියවර ඔහුගේ දක්ෂතා ඔප්නංවා ගන්නා ක්‍රමයෙනි. මෙම දිනවලදී පැවැත්වෙන යුධ හමුදා අන්තර් රෙජිමේන්තු මලල ක්‍රීඩා තරගාවලියේ මී.100 ඉසව්වටද ඊයේ(24) දින සහභාගී වූ චමෝද් මෙතෙක් ඔහු එම ඉසව්වෙන් වාර්තා කළ පෞද්ගලික හොදම දක්ෂතාවය වාර්තා කිරීමට සමත් වූයේ රිදී පදක්කද දිනා ගනිමිනි.එහිදී ඔහු විසින් දැක්වූ දක්ෂතාවය තත්.10.47කි.

පසුගිය කාලය තුළ යෝධසිංහ සිය පුද්ගලික දක්ශතාව සිග්‍රයෙන් වර්ධනය කරමින් මෙරට වේගවත්ම ක්‍රීඩකයා ලෙස කිරිළු පළඳා සිටියි.

2018 වසරේ මුලින්ම කණිෂ්ඨයෙකු ලෙස ශ්‍රී ලංකාව නියෝජනය කිරීමට වරම් ලැබූ යෝධසිංහ අඛළුණ්ඩව වසර 7 ක් තම දක්ෂතා කෙමෙන් වර්ධනය කරගනිමින් ජාතික තලය අතික්‍රමණය කරන්න සමත්ව සිටියි.

නමුත් ඔහුට ජාත්‍යන්තර තරග අවස්තාවක් 2019 න් පසුව හිමිවූයේ වසර ගණනකට පසුවයි. ඒ ඉන්දියාවේ පැවති ආරාධිත තරගාවලියකට වුවත් අවාසනාවන්ත ලෙස තරග ආරම්භය අසාර්ථක විය.

පසුගිය දා ලෝක ගෘහස්ත මලල ක්‍රීඩා ශූරතාවලියට සුදුසුකම් සැපිරූ ක්‍රීඩකයෙකු ලෙස සහභාගී වූ යෝධසිංහ එහිදීද උපරිම දක්ශතා දැක්වීමට සමත් විය. එසේම පසුගිය දා ඩුබායි හී දී පැවති මීටර් 100 ආරාධිත ග්‍රොන් ප්‍රී තරගාවලියේදී තත්පර 10.27 ක දක්ශතාවක් දක්වමින් සමස්ත තරගයේ දෙවැන්නා ලෙස තරගය අවසන් කළේය.

ඔහුට දැන් ඇත්තේ තමන්වම පරාජය කරමින් තත්පර 10.10 සීමාවට පිවිසීමයි. ඊට තවත් තරගකාරී අවස්ථා හිමිවිය යුතුවේ.

2018 සමයේ කණිෂ්ඨ ශ්‍රී ලංකාව නියෝජනය කළ ක්‍රීඩකයන් ගොන්න අත එම වකවානුවේ ක්‍රීඩා කළ ක්‍රීඩකයන් අතරින් මේ දක්වා ක්‍රීඩාවේ රැඳී සිටින සීමිත ක්‍රීඩකයන් ප්‍රමාණයෙන් එක් ක්‍රීඩකයෙක්.

The Sri Lankan mixed 4x400m relay team competed at the World Athletics Relays 2025 held in Guangzhou, China on May 10 and 11, aiming to qualify for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan this September.

In the first round, Sri Lanka was unable to finish the race due to a minor injury sustained by the first lap runner, Aruna Darshana. However, the team was given another chance to qualify through the second qualifying round.

For the second heat, Sadew Rajakaruna replaced the injured Aruna Darshana. The team lineup was Kalinga Kumarage, Nadeesha Ramanayaka, Sadew Rajakaruna, and Harshani Fernando.

Unfortunately, Sri Lanka finished last in their heat, placing 7th out of 7 with a time of 3:20.61. Only the top three teams in each heat secured spots for the Tokyo World Championships.

Among the Sri Lankan athletes, Nadeesha Ramanayaka stood out with a solid performance, clocking 53.38 seconds in her lap. Kalinga Kumarage ran the first lap in 46.43 seconds, Sadew Rajakaruna followed with 47.12 seconds, and Harshani Fernando, who recently recorded a personal best of 53.10 seconds, managed 53.68 seconds in her leg.

Later in the evening, the USA won the gold medal in the event, with Australia and Kenya earning silver and bronze respectively.

Despite the setback, the experience gained will be valuable for Sri Lanka’s athletes as they continue to build for future international competitions.

ආසියානු තරගාවලියකට ශ්‍රී ලංකාව නියෝජනය කිරීමට යොවුන් වියේදීම අවස්තාව ලැබීම ක්‍රීඩා දිවියේ හැරවුම් ලක්ෂයක් ලෙස සැලකෙනවා.

කෙසේ වෙතත්, පාසල් ක්‍රීඩක ක්‍රීඩිකාවන් නියෝජනය කිරීම හේතුවෙන් අධ්‍යාපන අමාත්‍යංශයේ නිර්දේශය කණ්ඩායමට මෙතෙක් ලැබී නැහැ.

කණ්ඩායමට ක්‍රීඩා අමාත්‍යංශයේ නිර්දේශය ලබා දීමට වගේම ක්‍රීඩක ක්‍රීඩිකාවන්ගේ පාසල් වෙත යොමු කිරීමට මෙම නිර්දේශය ඉතා වැදගත්.

එසේම වීසා ලබා ගැනීමට මෙන්ම ගුවන් ටිකට් පත් වෙන්කර ගැනීමටත් මේ අනුව ගැටළු මතුවනවා.

World Athletics president is up against six rivals when it comes to succeeding International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach in March

Sebastian Coe says he is “excited and honoured” to run for the presidency of the IOC in 2025.

With Thomas Bach stepping down, Coe is one of seven candidates.

Coe said: “I’m excited and honoured to share with you that I’ll be running for the Presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as announced by the IOC a short while ago.

“Olympic sport is fundamental to my DNA. I had the privilege of being a double Olympic Champion, I’ve chaired an Olympic and Paralympic Games – London 2012 – from bid, through delivery and legacy implementation, I’ve chaired a National Olympic Committee, the BOA, and I’ve led an international federation through some turbulent times, retaining athletics’ position as a cornerstone of the Olympic Games.

“Sport plays a critical role in driving and maintaining the health and fitness of people, young and old, in every country around the world. But it faces significant challenges on multiple fronts.

“The Covid years saw many people struggle through inactivity and many sports organisations suffer through lack of funds. We need to invest more in both over the next decade.

“A laser like focus on sport must be the priority for the IOC. I believe I can help achieve this and more.

“I’ll release a detailed manifesto in the coming weeks so the voting members are able to understand what I stand for and believe in.”

The other candidates include: David Lappartient, president of cycling’s governing body; Morinari Watanabe, head of the gymnastics governing body; Johan Eliasch, president of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation; Kirsty Coventry, IOC executive board member and former swimmer from Zimbabwe; Prince Feisal al Hussein of Jordan; and Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. of Spain, whose father was IOC president for 21 years.

Only IOC members are eligible to stand as candidates, with votes cast by the rest of the 111-strong membership of the Olympic body.

Sri Lanka secured nine gold medals, nine silver medals, and 17 bronze medals at the South Asian Athletics Federation (SAFF) Junior Championship, which concluded at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai, on Friday (13).

In doing so, Sri Lanka also shattered four meet records. Team leader Lesandu Arthavidu from Ananda College stunned the arena on the final day as he cleared a massive personal best of 2.17m in the high jump, winning the gold medal with a new meet record. Tharusha Mendis, just 17, finished second for the silver medal, clearing 2.10m.

Sri Lanka once again sealed both the 100m and 200m men’s events during the championship, with two Ananda College athletes, Merone Wijesinghe and Indurasa Vidushan, winning the 100m and 200m respectively, while also setting new meet records in the process. They came together once again, along with Malith Thamel and Dineth Induwara, to secure the 4x100m gold medal.

While the 4x100m men’s relay gold medal was expected, Sri Lanka’s 4x400m team ran their hearts out to beat India, who had individual gold and bronze medalists in the team. Hasindu Methsara, Omel Shashintha, Jathya Kirulu, and Sadev Rajakaruna clocked 3:09.28 seconds for the gold medal. Kirulu, who finished outside the medals in the 400m in Chennai despite being a World Junior semifinalist, ran his heart out, giving the lead to Sri Lanka, where Sadev, who wasn’t included in the individual 400m, ran the race of his life to secure the gold medal.

Meanwhile, two 16-year-olds excelled in the 800m, with Davindu Awishka clocking a new meet record of 1:49.83 seconds to win the men’s 800m gold medal, while Tharushi Abhisheka clocked 2:10.17 seconds to win the women’s 800m gold medal.

The other gold medal came from 110m hurdler Sandun Kosala, who clocked 14.06 seconds to win the gold medal.

Sri Lanka fielded a team of 53 athletes for the 4th edition of the SAFF Junior Championship, which served as a steppingstone for budding athletes towards their senior careers.

India won the overall championship with 21 gold medals, 22 silver medals, and five bronze medals. Apart from Sri Lanka and India, none of the other participating countries were able to win a gold or silver medal. Bangladesh finished third with three bronze medals, while the Maldives secured two bronze and Nepal one. Bhutan and Pakistan failed to win any medals.

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) promises to bring more frequent South Asian Athletics Championships, with the last SAFF Junior Championship held in 2018. The AFI stated that they will be holding the SAFF senior and junior championships in alternate years in a budget competition model, allowing regional athletes to gain international exposure at a lower cost.

Hurdler Sandun Kosala secured Sri Lanka’s only gold medal on day two of the South Asian Athletics Federation (SAFF) Junior Championship 2024, held in Chennai, India, on Thursday.

Kosala, hailing from Lyceum International School Wattala, clocked 14.06 seconds to win the gold medal, while Vishwa Tharuka clocked 14.27 seconds to win the bronze medal in the same event.

In the men’s 400m, Omel Shashintha clocked a personal best of 47.17 seconds to win silver, while World Junior Semifinalist Jathya Kirulu finished fourth with 47.56 seconds.

In the women’s 100m hurdles, Miyuni Sidansa won the bronze medal, clocking 15.32 seconds. India’s Unnathi Aiyappa won the gold medal with a new meet record of 13.93 seconds, while India’s Sabta Toppo clocked 13.96 seconds, breaking the previous record to win silver.

In the men’s discus throw event, Gateway College’s athlete secured a bronze medal with a distance of 39.24m, while Savindya Jayamaha won the bronze medal in the women’s discus throw with a distance of 37.95m.

In the women’s long jump, Sri Lanka entered Dhananjana Ranasgalla in place of Madushika Herath, who did not make the trip due to injury. Ranasgalla, who was originally drafted for the 4x100m relay team, took up the challenge and finished third, winning the bronze medal with a distance of 5.73m.

In the men’s long jump, Thevindu Duwage won the bronze medal with a performance of 7.22m. Dulanjana Pradeepani secured another bronze medal in the 3000m, clocking 10:39.39 seconds, while Takshima Nuhansa clocked 55.27 seconds to win the bronze medal in the women’s 400m.

Sri Lanka sealed three gold medals on the opening day of the SAFF Junior Athletics Championship 2024, which commenced yesterday in Chennai, India.

Anandian sprinter Merone Wijesinghe became the fastest junior in South Asia as he shattered the meet record, clocking 10.41 seconds to win the 100m gold medal. He also erased the Sri Lanka Junior record set by Shehan Ambepitiya (10.43). Induwara Weerarathne of Leeds College Matara finished second, bettering the previous meet record with 10.49 seconds. This marks the first instance where two Sri Lankan juniors ran below 10.5 seconds in one race.

Sixteen-year-old girls Tharushi Abisheka from Gampola Wickramabahu NS and Sansala Himashani of Ambagamuwa CC won the gold and bronze medals, respectively, against the Asian junior champion with timings of 2:10.17 and 2:12.12 (PB).

“I beat Asian Junior Silver medalist Laxita Sandilea here to win the gold medal, so I’m very happy,” said Tharushi after the race.

Sixteen-year-old Savindu Avishka of Naththandiya Dammissara National School shocked the stadium by erasing 5 seconds from his PB to win the gold medal with a new championship record of 1:49.82. He has three more years to compete in junior races. Avishka’s 1:49 is the leading time in Sri Lanka for 2024. Avishka’s 1:49.82 ranks 15th in the World U18 rankings and 4th among those born in 2008. He beat India’s Vinod Kumar (1:50.07) and Bopanna Klappa (1:50.45).

Sri Lanka won two silver medals in the high jump as Kashmika Timeshi and Nethra Samadhi both cleared 1.65m. India’s Pooja won the gold medal with a new meet record of 1.80m.

In the shot put, Jayavi Rahindha won the bronze medal with a throw of 15.62m.

In the women’s 100m, Gateway College sprinter Shenella Karunarathna won the bronze medal, clocking a personal best of 12.04 seconds. Another Gateway sprinter, Dhanani Kodituwattku, achieved a PB time of 12.12 seconds and placed 4th.

The South Asian Athletics Federation (SAFF) Junior Championship 2024 commences tomorrow in Chennai. This marks the beginning of a professional athletics career for many juniors as they will get their first experience in traveling and competing internationally as a team, getting to know fellow athletes who they will compete with for decades to come. This is the fourth edition of the championship, which Sri Lanka has hosted twice before.

“The regional event is a very important championship as most of the future national athletes will be getting their first international exposure at these championships,” said Saman Kumara Gunawardana, the secretary of Sri Lanka Athletics.

Several athletes who excelled in the previous three editions of the SAFF Junior Championship went on to represent Sri Lanka on the world stage, winning several medals for the country in the process.

2007 – Waruna Lakshan Dayarathne

Javelin thrower Waruna Lakshan Dayarathne began his international journey in 2007, representing the national team at the SAFF Juniors. He went on to qualify for the 2017 World Athletics Championship ten years later. Other athletes with multiple international medals, such as sprinter Shehan Ambepitiya and high jumper Dulanjali Ranasinghe, also represented the team in 2007.

“I wasn’t even included in the final 8 for trials. I had to make an appeal to the President of Sri Lanka Athletics, Maj. Gen. Palitha Fernando, back then to compete in the trials, where I won and got into the team,” reminisced Waruna, while playing with his son at home.

“It was my first international experience; the first time meeting many of my friends who I later competed with for years, as 80% of our team went into the national pool later on and stayed in senior athletics for a decade following that.”

“That competition gave me the hunger to do more. Despite finishing third in that event, I went on to compete in three Asian Championships and qualified for the 2017 World Athletics Championship,” said Dayarathne.

Sachith Maduranga, who finished fourth, went on to win a silver medal in the 2017 Asian Championship. Ambepitiya secured three Commonwealth Youth Gold medals the next year in 2008, the 2010 SAG 100m Gold medal, and even trained with Usain Bolt at the time.

2013 – Yupun Abeykoon

The second edition of the Championship was held in Ranchi, India, six years after the first edition in 2013. Hurdler Supun Viraj Randeniya, quarter-milers Shiwanthi Rathnayaka, Vinura Lakmal, Harsha Chathuranga, and high jumper Thilina Karunarathne were stars on the team. However, it was the fourth-place triple jumper of that competition, Yupun Abeykoon, who went on to become the most successful athlete out of the batch.

“It was my first international experience, which I always cherish. I believe it was that defeat which pushed me to continue athletics, mentally prepared me for the future, and boosted my will to become the first South Asian to run 100m under 10 seconds and qualify for the Olympics,” said Abeykoon.

The Commonwealth Games bronze medalist in the 100m said he believes that junior international meets are a must and that everyone who qualifies should be sent to gain those experiences, which shape their careers for the next decade.

“I didn’t have many dreams back then. I was the second-best triple jumper on the team behind Atheetha Karunasinghe and finished fourth with 14.96m during the competition, but that was my greatest experience and lesson to date. Also, I met several friends during that camp whom I trained with for years to come, like Vinura Lakmal, who I met during the competition and is here in Italy training with me today,” said Yupun.

The Italy-based sprinter focused on the 100m after 2015, leaving the triple jump, which took him to the pinnacle of his career, becoming the first South Asian sub-10 runner in the event and the first South Asian sprinter to qualify for the Olympics and World Championships in the 100m.

2018 – Aruna Darshana

In the most recent edition of the championship in 2018, Sri Lanka excelled with Aruna Darshana becoming a star by winning three gold medals (200m, 400m, and 4x400m). Darshana went on to win Asian Junior gold medals in the 400m and 4x400m in the same year and became Sri Lanka’s first 400m runner to qualify for the semifinals in the Olympics during the Paris Olympics.

“That was my second international experience but my first international win. It was a good launching pad for my international career, following which I went on to win Asian Junior Gold, represent Sri Lanka at the World Junior Championship, finish 4th in the Asian Games 4x400m relay, and won the 2019 SAG gold medal in the 400m and 4x400m. I still train and compete with friends I met through that competition, and I think the SAFF Junior Championship mentally prepared me to become a professional athlete and gave me a clear vision of my future potential,” said Darshana.

The competition also brought attention to athletes like Pasindu Kodikara and Pabasara Niku, who went on to win Asian Championship gold medals in the 4x400m relay alongside Darshana.

Sprinters such as Shelinda Jansen, Amasha de Silva, and Dilshi Kumarasinghe also shone during the meet. Jansen went on to finish 9th in the Youth Olympics in the same year, while Amasha and Dilshi excelled with medals at the Asian Juniors and went on to win South Asian gold medals as well as represent Sri Lanka at the Asian level.
