Javelin star Rumesh rises to 7th in global ranking

Sri Lanka’s javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathiranage has achieved a career best world ranking, climbing to 7th following his impressive performance in Kenya. He now also tops the 2026 global javelin throw list.

The latest ranking comes on the back of a series of strong performances, highlighted by his gold medal at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi last month. Rumesh set a new meet record with a throw of 89.28 metres, outclassing a worldclass field that included Olympic champion Thomas Röhler and Olympic silver medallist Julius Yego. It was his second throw beyond 89 metres in just 30 days, underscoring his consistency at the highest level.

His rise to 7th in the world rankings cements his status as one of the standout javelin athletes of the season, with growing expectations ahead of upcoming global competitions. The ranking also secures his place at this year’s World Athletics Ultimate Championship.

Meanwhile, Rumesh has received financial backing for his success, with Sri Lanka Cricket granting him Rs 10 million. However, controversy arose after no officials were present to welcome him at the airport. Responding to criticism on social media, Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage stated that Rumesh receives a monthly payment of Rs 210,000, while his coach Tony Prasanna is paid Rs 100,000. He added that the Ministry also covers their travel expenses, emphasising that resources are directed toward athlete support rather than ceremonial welcomes.
