It was a weekend of scorching times and strategic battles for Sri Lanka’s track and field athletes. Sri Lanka Men Clock Historic Second-Fastest Time Ever

In a thrilling Men’s 4x400m showdown, the Sri Lankan team went head-to-head with India. While they ultimately finished second, they didn’t just compete—they made history.

The Sri Lankan quartet—Aruna Darshana, Kalhara Idupa, Pasindu Kodikkara, and Sadew Wimansa—blazed around the track to clock a phenomenal 3:02.16. This time is not just a personal best for the current lineup; it is officially the second-fastest 4x400m time in Sri Lankan athletic history.

It was a razor-thin finish against their rival:

This incredible result underscores the team’s upward trajectory. Just as impressive is the impact on the global landscape. Heading into this competition, Sri Lanka was ranked as one of the top teams in the world for the 2026 season:

The Road to Botswana

The timing of this performance is crucial. The attention now shifts to the World Relays, being held in Botswana from May 2–3. The criteria for qualifying are strict: the top 8 teams from the previous year’s championship qualify automatically, while the next 16 slots are determined solely by the current world rankings.

With their second-fastest time in history locked in, the Sri Lankan men are in a prime position to secure their place among the world’s elite 24 teams in Botswana. The current formidable four (Darshana, Idupa, Kodikara, and Wimansa) have proven they belong on the big stage.

Women’s Team Battles to Second Behind Powerful India

Sri Lanka’s women’s 4x400m team also delivered a commanding performance in Chandigarh. The lineup of Nishendra Harshani, Jithma Shenari, Sayuri Lakshima, and Jayeshi Uththara showcased their talent and resilience.

In a competitive race, they finished second, clocking a solid time of 3:36.94. They were outpaced only by India, who won the gold medal on home soil with a strong time of 3:32.81.
