An extraordinary gazette has been issued, temporarily suspending the registration of three national sports associations in Sri Lanka.
According to the notice, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has suspended the registrations of the Athletics, Table Tennis, and Gymnastics associations, effective from August 25, 2025.
The action was taken under Sections 32 and 33 of the Sports Law No. 25 of 1973, as amended.
The gazette further appoints the Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports as the competent authority to oversee the administration of the suspended associations. This interim oversight will remain in place until new office bearers are elected at annual general meetings held under the revised constitutions of the respective bodies.
The decision aims to ensure full compliance with the Sports Law, particularly regarding constitutional reforms and the proper conduct of elections within national sports organizations.
The scheduled election of the Athletics Association, originally set for August 18, was postponed after the election committee appointed by the Department of Sports Development failed to conduct proceedings in accordance with the Sports Act.
