Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone ran a blisteringly fast race to win the Olympic Games Paris 2024 women’s 400m hurdles gold medal in a new world record time of 50.37 seconds.

The American blasted out of the blocks, chasing down her biggest rival, the Netherlands’ Femke Bol, in the lane outside of her before passing her easily with over 100m to go.

As McLaughlin-Levrone raced down the finishing straight, with the roars of the Stade de France crowd behind her, the thousands in the stands knew they were witnessing something special.

The U.S. superstar was alone, her competitors far behind her. And for the seconds it took before she passed the finish line, you got the impression she was chasing history as much as another Olympic title.

There is an air of expectation every time McLaughlin-Levrone runs. However, the hype before this race reached fever-pitch as a showdown between the American and her Dutch rival Bol made this one of the most highly-anticipated finals of the Games.

Would McLaughlin-Levrone retain the Olympic title she won at Tokyo 2020? Would the in-form Bol shock the world with victory in Paris?

In the end, the night belonged to McLaughlin-Levrone. And the victory was emphatic.

The American flew as Bol faded, with another American Anna Cockrell taking silver in a personal best time of 51.87. Bol crossed the line in 52.15 to win bronze.

Be American quartet that broke the mixed 4×400-meter relay world record during Friday’s prelims may have peaked a day early.

They weren’t anywhere near as fast in Saturday night’s final.

Netherlands upset the U.S thanks to final-leg push by Femke Bol, who chased down and passed Kaylyn Brown on the final stretch to cross the line in 3:07.43, just .02 off the world record the American set a night earlier.

Bol ran a final-leg 47.93, which was more than a second faster than Brown’s 49.14.

Vernon Norwood, Shamier Little, Bryce Deadmon and Brown finished in second, .177 behind the gold medal winners.

Karunarathne, who is 19 years old and holds gold medals from the Asian Games and Asian Championships, has a personal best of 2:00.66 seconds. Her qualification for the Olympics 800m event was based on her world ranking.

Nadeesha Ramanayaka, who competed in the UAE Grand Prix last weekend, competed in her pet event 400m and placed 4th, clocking 54.02 seconds, while Australian Laura McShane clocked only 53.56 seconds to win the event. Japan’s favorites, Haruna Kuboyama and Yuna Iwata, clocked 53.65 seconds and 53.73 seconds, respectively, to finish 2nd and 3rd.

It was a disappointment for all who waiting for Tharushi Karunaratne’s event, as she did not participate, citing illness. She also failed to finish the race at the UAE Grand Prix after completing the 600m mark.

Team Sri Lanka will be taking part next in the Asian Relay Championships on the 20th and 21st of this month in Thailand.
