Marathoners Anuradha Indajith Cooray and Hiruni wijayarathne faced an unfortunate incidents as both of them did not finish the IAAF World Championship marathon  at London on sunday .

Cooray gave up the race after 12km due to a ligament injury which he was suffering from earlier on while Hiruni gave up the race even after running 1 hours and 23 minute 21km as she said her legs cramping from early in the race.

The 39 year old Cooray who competed in his third IAAF World Championship marathon, said that he was suffering from a minor injury after running a 10km race a few weeks ago in London which he won and rested ahead of the world race yesterday, but it did not come off well

“The course had too many bends and it obviously did not help. After passing 10km my legs started to hurt and by the 12km mark I had to give up as it was hard to continue,” said Cooray over the phone after his race.

Cooray who lives in London had represented Sri Lanka in three Olympics apart from the World championship and is the most senior Sri Lankan track and field athlete at the moment among those who are still actively competing.

Cooray also said that he has not decided anything about the future just now, as he is eyeing the Commonwealth Games next year, which he will decide after one more marathon, probably later this year.

Hiruni who represented Sri Lanka for the first time said this on her facebook after unfortunate incident

“Dear Friends,
You will not find me on the World Championship results. I did not finish todays race. I am not injured, it was simply a terrible day. My legs were cramping early, at 10km. Every step was a battle, amd the effort to run 1:23 through the 21km split was insane. The turns and hills on the course + 2pm start time was also tough to overcome. I’m super disappointed in myself, especially since training was going so well. I won’t let this bad result impact the future of my competitions for Sri Lanka. I promise to recover, and get back to work for 2018 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games standards. Learning from mistakes and moving on.
Huge congratulations to my competitors!”
